Young Health Programme Impact Fellowship 2023 Image

Are you a young person aged 18-30 who is looking to create a healthier environment for other young people in your community?

Are you leading projects within a registered non-profit organsiation?

Do you have an innovative approach that focuses on tackling the main lifestyle behaviours (tobacco use, physical inactivity, harmful use of alcohol, unhealthy diets, exposure to air pollution) which contribute to chronic disease?

If you answered yes to all of these questions, we want to hear from you!

Selected Fellows will be awarded a One Young World Scholarship to attend the 2023 Summit in Belfast, a US $10,000 grant to deliver a project through their eligible non-profit organsation, and unique leadership opportunities to support their development.

Background

Non-communicable diseases, such as heart disease, cancer, and diabetes and respiratory conditions, are the world’s greatest cause of mortality(1). Most non-communicable diseases are the result of five particular risk factors (tobacco use, physical inactivity, unhealthy diet, exposure to air pollution and the harmful use of alcohol) that lead to four key metabolic/physiological changes (raised blood pressure, overweight/obesity, raised blood glucose and raised cholesterol)(2). It is estimated that 70% of premature deaths are due to behaviours initiated during adolescence(3).  We believe that improving adolescent health and well-being will deliver a triple dividend: not only will it deliver major benefits for adolescents, and for those around them, but it will also improve their health as adults and the health of children they will have. An investment in adolescent health is an investment in the health of future generations(4).

Since 2016, AstraZeneca, through its Young Health Programme (YHP), has partnered with One Young World to identify and empower young leaders who are tackling the burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in their communities. Powered and delivered by a Scholarship programme, more than 100 young leaders have joined the One Young World Community and participated in the annual One Young World Summit.

We know that the One Young World Summit can unlock opportunities, spark ideas, and turn plans into action. We also know that young people often lack opportunities to receive funding and participate in structured development, especially in under-resourced communities and among marginalised groups.

About the Fellowship

This year, AstraZeneca is going beyond Scholarships to power and deliver a unique YHP Impact Fellowship that provides development opportunities, access to networks, and funding to help the most impactful young health leaders to help them create even more positive change.

By collaborating with One Young World, these inspiring young leaders will attend the One Young World Summit 2023 in Belfast, UK and receive a US $10,000 grant to contribute to a specific project within their eligible non-profit organisation. This grant will assist in the development and delivery of effective health promotion programmes, with an emphasis on under-resourced and marginalised communities in low- and middle-income countries. We believe that access to networks, development, and funding will lead to a global health movement led by, and for, young people.

That’s why we’re creating a bespoke YHP Impact Fellowship which will enable selected young non-profit leaders to receive:

  • Access to Networks: Participation in the 2023 One Young World Summit and Ambassador Network, and access to an Alumni group of other young changemakers who are all passionate about NCD prevention

  • Access to Development: Structured learning and development offerings to enable you to scale your impact, including both self-directed and live learning. This includes access to the One Young World Academy, an award-winning MBA programme with a cUnviersity accreditation, and professional training.

  • Access to Funding: All Fellows will be expected to manage a community project that aims to improve youth health and prevent NCDs in their community. To enable this, AstraZeneca’s YHP will be awarding US $10,000 grants to each of the non-profit organisations led by the Fellows

This Fellowship is powered by and delivered in partnership with AstraZeneca’s Young Health Programme (YHP). The YHP is a core part of AstraZeneca’s sustainability ambition to use its capabilities to make a meaningful impact where society needs it – health. The YHP is a global disease prevention programme with a unique focus on young people aged 10 to 24, living in vulnerable environments and under-resourced settings around the world. The YHP aims to prevent the most common non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as cancer, type II diabetes, heart disease and respiratory disease by addressing the primary risk factors - tobacco use, harmful use of alcohol, physical inactivity, unhealthy diet and exposure to air pollution.

YHP activities support the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goal Target 3.4 - to reduce premature deaths linked to NCDs by one third by 2030.
